About PROUD
PROUD is a dog sanctuary solely operated by dedicated staff and hard-working volunteers. Co-founders John and Marilyn Lofgren began rescuing dogs out of their home in 1982. The two turned passion into purpose in 1998 and founded the non-profit PROUD, providing a sanctuary to thousands of dogs over the years. At any one time PROUD takes care of approximately 100 dogs.
Dogs are never put down at PROUD unless they’re suffering. Most shelters do not have this policy. Dogs can live out their entire lives at PROUD as they await a loving family to come adopt them. Until that time, the staff and volunteers are their family. They are loved.

Our Mission
The mission of PROUD is to eliminate suffering and promote the welfare of dogs through direct action and education. PROUD is committed to encouraging the humane treatment of all animals, reducing the number of homeless animals, promoting the benefits of the human/animal bond and supporting the spaying/neutering of all animals.
The dogs at PROUD live together in spacious facilities specially designed to meet their needs. They receive round-the-clock care to help them adjust to their new lives.
PROUD works towards achieving its mission by:
- Rescuing dogs from life threatening situations at animal shelters
- Finding dogs permanent loving homes with qualified families
- Assisting owners of dogs who can no longer keep them
- Working cooperatively with animal shelters and other rescue groups in the community towards our common goals of saving dogs’ lives and reducing pet overpopulation
- Educating owners of dogs about their proper care and training and about other aspects of the breeds

How are donations used? We use all donations strategically. Absolutely nothing gets wasted. With cash donations, we’re able to fill a need immediately as it arises. Some of our ongoing costs include: staffing, dog food, medicine, vet visits (health check, spaying and neutering and emergency), dog houses and beds, cleaning supplies, transportation costs, basic grooming, chew toys and more. Thank you for your interest in adopting a PROUD Dog! PROUD provides an adoption program for all dogs that can be rehabilitated. Most of the animals that come to PROUD go to their forever homes, leading happy and fulfilling lives as a family pet.
